How this guide was reviewed

The workflow was reviewed against hands-on phone-repair and device-inspection experience, then checked against the limits of current browser access. Browser observations, user-confirmed checks, and items that require operating-system, carrier, manufacturer, or physical inspection remain separate.

01

Test before you erase

Run the functional inspection while your normal apps, account, and settings are still available. It is easier to test cameras, calls, microphones, charging, Bluetooth, and other everyday behavior before the phone is reset.

Record any known defect so the listing or buyer conversation accurately reflects the device condition.

02

Back up before signing out

Confirm that the photos, messages, authenticator data, contacts, app data, and other information you care about are safely backed up or transferred. Do not assume every app restores everything automatically.

If the phone contains business or authentication data, verify the destination before wiping the original.

03

Remove account and activation locks

Follow the platform’s normal sign-out and device-removal process so the buyer can activate the phone. A factory reset without proper account removal can leave the device locked to the previous owner.

Complete these steps before the final handoff rather than promising to fix them later.

04

Erase only after the backup and account checks are complete

Once the data is verified and the account is removed correctly, perform the normal factory erase. Then confirm the phone reaches the expected setup screen instead of asking for credentials that should have been removed.

Do not sign back into the device after the reset just to demonstrate it unless you plan to erase it again before transfer.

05

Disclose condition clearly

A buyer should know about cracks, camera issues, weak speakers, charging problems, battery concerns, replaced parts, or intermittent behavior you observed. Clear disclosure reduces disputes and makes the sale more trustworthy.

Continue the inspection

Keep testing with a second signal.

A useful diagnosis usually comes from comparing more than one symptom. These related guides can help you build a fuller picture.
